Use Case: Data Optimized Plug and Abandonment of Offshore Unmanned Wells
The MF Gateway provides the well engineers with the comprehensive and
reliable historical pressure and integrity data they need to thoroughlyassess well conditions. This continuous data stream, even from warm-stacked or NUI platforms, allows them to accurately categorize
wells based on risk and design the most efficient P&A strategy. This proactive approach helps to anticipate and mitigate potential issues like downhole problems, annular failures, or gas seepage before a rig
is on-site. Download the full use case document here:
Offshore Well Monitoring Use Cases for mesh LPWAN and Edge AI
- Monitoring temporarily abandoned offshore wells
- Gathering data from old drilled offshore wells before P&A activity starts
- Monitoring permanently abandoned offshore wells
A proven solution for use on abandoned offshore rigs
MinFarm Tech Ltd, an Irish engineering company with deep domain expertise in LoRaWAN, has developed and deployed a turnkey solution that enables the transmission of pressure data to a customer dashboard from offshore abandoned wells where communication, power and well control equipment has been removed and where no cellular coverage is available.
Unique features to meet the real time monitoring and operation requirement from a field of abandoned offshore rigs
- Provides quality data points: Simple to install wireless pressure sensors: Rated to 5400 psi (0.15% FS) for real time data collection from Xmas Tree, A Annulus, B Annulus, C Annulus on every rig in the field.
- Supports real time monitoring across a field of rig: Low power 5 km wide area LoRaWAN network will cover multiple rigs during abandonment process from a single Gateway located on a centrally located rig.
- ATEX certification for all communication equipment : Zone 0/1 sensors, Zone 2 Gateway, suitable for rig deployment
- Autonomous power for all communication equipment: Battery powered LoRaWAN Pressure Sensors (5 year SAFT replaceable battery life). Solar and Battery Powered Communication hub LoRaWAN Gateway (Autonomous and uninterrupted, No rig power required)
- No communication network on rig or cellular coverage required: Mesh LPWAN and edge compute transmission system on Gateway to shore dashboard (no local LTE network required)
- Easy to install: The MF Gateway can be rented and deployed simply by field engineers with no background in LoRaWAN or satellite transmission technology, everything comes pre-configured and will work out of the box. Our customers install within hours.
- Feature rich shore based dashboard access: Drilling engineers can view real time data in simple to follow charts with downloadable Excel formats.
- Fits your budget: The MF Gateway works can be rented at a monthly cost equivalent to one boattrip to an offshore rig, and provide over 1000 times more data points.
- A totally Private Edge Network: The MF Gateway mesh LPWAN and edge compute network create a totally private network offshore where data is stored on customer owned assets with no external or cloud compute resources required.
- Improves personnel safety: Less rig time gathering data manually means less time your personnel spend in hazardous environments.
How it works
Battery powered LoRaWAN gauges are installed on Xmas Trees along with wellhead side outlets to record pressure data. Designed to operate on unmanned offshore platforms with limited power and zero permanent staff, MF Gateway creates a self-healing, multi-hop LoRaWAN mesh across platforms to transport well data to the customer dashboard. The system uses an edge-native approach where data stays stored locally, and an autonomous AI agent orchestrates evidence gathering, diagnoses probable causes, and delivers actionable reports directly to Well Integrity Engineers.
How we save our customers time and money
A solution that monitors a field of wellheads, will produce nearly 1000 times more data points than would be gathered during a monthly field visit where pressure gauges are recorded manually. The data is sent to the customer dashboard in real time enabling preventive maintenance. Once the solution is installed, no field visits are required providing ongoing savings throughout the lifetime of the abandonment project.
